Coffin Bone Rotation & Sinkers

This dreaded condition is related to Founder and also Laminitis. The horse’s hooves become very sore as a result of Founder or Laminitis. But, once the coffin bone has rotated or sunk, the horse’s condition is generally considered fatal.

Coffin Bone Rotation means that the tip of the coffin bone has dropped down, tearing and ripping the tissue that surrounds it on its way down. The X-ray shows the coffin bone tipped down, with a specific degree of rotation. In extreme cases, the coffin bone can be felt through the bottom of the hoof. This is very painful for the horse, who will be seen alternating its stance on the diagonal with greater and greater frequency.

Coffin Bone Sinkers refers to the condition where the coffin bone stays in position as seen from the side, then falls straight down inside the hoof. The X-ray shows the coffin bone with no hoof underneath it, so the horse is standing on his bone without cushion. Again, the extreme case is where the coffin bone can be felt or seen through the bottom of the hoof.
